Blog Post #7: “My Thoughts about the 2008 Presidental Election” Wednesday, Oct 29 2008

This 2008 Presidential Election is my first voting opportunity. At a younger age,I always wished to have the power to vote for the American President. Now that I am of voting age, nothing can keep me from voting. I have always felt excited about the presidential elections. The elections are important because they affect everyone living in America. I believe people should vote because it is their duty as a citizen and it is important to the future of America. Voting in the 2008 election will be beneficial to America mainly because we are in need of the right leader that is able to take on our current problems in America, and also able to bring our country out of this economic slump. The right Presidential candidate should be able to make the right decisions to make our country a better place. We need a better America because each and every last one of us lives in this country. As of now, a majority of the people in America need a better quality of living. It is hard to live comfortable when only a small amount of people are able to make enough money. If you know who you want to win, then as an American you should go to the polls and vote for that Presidential Candidate. It is not just enough to watch the election broadcasted on the television, and hope for the candidate you want to win to become President. You have to go out and vote! People should not let long lines, travel distances, or paper work discourage them from registering and/or voting. I am ready and waiting for November 4, 2008!!!!
This 2008 election is one I’ll never forget. This election is making history as we speak. This is when I get my first chance to vote and have a voice. I’m happy I’m able to actually choose the candidate I feel would better our country. This election is also going to change many lives and make people go out and reach for the stars. I feel this is the time when everyone should’ve went out and registered to vote, because we need a change. The people who didn’t vote shame on them, because we as people want change but don’t want to do anything about it. How can we complain when we couldn’t get out and go register which only took a two minute process? We’re going through a hard time right now where the economy is crashing, gas prices increasing and it’s hard for people in New Orleans especially to find affordable housing. We also are still at war, we need a president who can resolve those issues and also help the economy. We need someone who’s for the people and not just for the rich, but also for the poor. That’s why it’s of importance for everyone’s voice to be heard. This election means so much to me. Not trying to sound racist, but we have someone of African American race running for the presidential election. It makes me proud to see that he fits my values and concerns about our country yet alone New Orleans. He seems as if he would be the perfect president. That’s how I feel him others may feel different. Everyone is voiced to their own opinion. To sum it all up how I feel about this 2008 presidential election I feel like my voice will be heard, people would make the right choice, and after this presidential election if people make the right choice this country would never be the same. I’m saying it in a good way.
Looking back, I never would have thought that we would be here. When I say here, of course, I’m referring to the possibility of having an African American president. I think that the nation has come a long way from the ideals of the past. I believe that both Barack Obama and John McCain are good candidates for presidency. They have exemplified this throughout their careers and I am hoping that the results of the election will prove this. I believe that you should choose your candidate on the way they plan to govern the nation. It is important to look past color and party to focus on the critical aspects of their campaign. In a nation that values freedom of choice, I am glad that we all have the freedom to vote. Our leaders should represent us and with that I say it is imperative that everyone vote so that their voices can be heard and we all can be represented accurately. There are many reasons that I would like to see Barak Obama win, but this has nothing to do with the color of his skin. I agree with most of his stands on issues concerning the nation, he’s a great leader, he works hard, and he’s determined to make a change in the way the country has been run in the past. At the same time, I realize that some things will not change. If McCain wins the election in fairness, there is no reason why he should not be president. I hope that everyone votes and if I am right about how far the nation has come, there are great things to come of the future.
I honestly don’t really care about the election. I understand this is a sensitive topic to many people and that it’s “politically correct” or whatever to have to care, but maybe it’s just that I’m tired of my peers always getting into pointless arguments because they think they know everything about politics or something. I did not vote this election year, because honestly, I do not know enough about both sides to be able to make a clear decision, but I believe both candidates have good intentions and plans to change the country for the good amongst all of the negative propaganda being spred about them. However, if I did plan on voting, and paid more attention to politics, I know that my decision on who would be best candidate would heavily depend on the credentials of the vice president nominees as well, simply because Obama and McCain both have such high chances of dying during their term. Obama is higly at risk of being assasinated, and McCain is just old, so since they might both die early, it would then become a matter of Palin vs Biden. I’m not exactly the brightest bulb out there, and like I mentioned, I’m not even all too much into politics, but it doesn’t take much to figure out that Palin lacks a properly functioning organ that sits inside the middle of everyone’s head.
The presidential election of 2008 will always be a special election. There are numerous reasons why I feel this way. One being because it was my first election to vote in. This presidential election was the first to have such a high young voter turn out. Teens and young adults were very interested and concerned with this election because the issues REALLY did affect them. The election was also special because it was my first time seeing a minority and a woman run for presidency. Learning oppourtunities also presented themselves in this election. I learned many things about our democracy and things about our economy that i’ve never known about or cared about before. I am very happy with the way that the election has turned and i do realize that everything won’t be fixed within the first term of the elected persons presidency.
My thoughts on the 2008 presidential election are firstly “historical” this presidential election is historical because for the first time in America an African American is running for president of the United States of America. This is significant because many people said that America would not change from its old ways and values. Many people say that America is still back in time when it comes to racial issues, fairness, women rights, and the economy. America seems to be changing slowly as time progresses. Even though Barack Obama is a presidential candidate does not always mean necessarily that America is ready for change, as excited as I am for Barack Obama sadly many other Americans are not ready are simply do not want an African American male in office and especially not a supreme office as president. It’s sad to believe that some Americans would rather not vote for Obama but for McCain whom obviously cannot handle the presidential load and is bound to follow Bush’s tactics. As the election day drew nearer the more it seemed as if Obama had a strong chance of winning. On Election Day many people believed that Obama had a slim chance but Obma won by a landslide! Maybe America has changed. The question is never for sure because many people are devastated because Obama won the presidental election. It is time for change and a new face and prospective of the United States of America. How can America progress with out change and Obama is a clear definition of change in a magnificent way!
The 2008 Presidential Election is one that will undoubtedly be marked in history books to come. Either way the country chose, there was going to be a first in office–the first African-American president or the first woman vice-president. I was not as involved or knowledgeable of the facts as I should have been, but I knew enough. In general, I don’t stay informed with the happenings in politics, but this was a very high profile election. It was history in the making, and I would be a part of it. I was a first-time voter, and I exercised my right that many before me had suffered for. I did not know what to expect the outcome of the election to be. Well, that night I had the television on but wasn’t exactly watching the coverage of the results. It wasn’t until I heard the screams in the halls of the dorms that I knew something had happened. I turned to the nearest news channel and just watched. I was truly in awe. The masses were celebrating Obama’s win! I couldn’t rejoice like many others because I saw it as a solemn, inspiring moment. History has now been made. I was just trying to take it all in…thinking about how far the nation has possibly come. Have we really come this far? This was definitely an advancement, so America is well on its way to accepting and choosing change as it comes in many forms. However, this election has brought out the best and worst in some people. Hopefully, they will soon realize that the past is the past, and we must not continue to physically live in the present and mentally in the past. It just won’t work anymore, and this election shows that.
I thought the election was wonderful, we finally have a black president. Thank God. Its about time theres true change in America. It was a big step for Americans not to look totally at the color of the skin but at the morals and values of the canidate, BUt November 4 will always be a day i remeber.. 930 to be exact. It was so great beacuse Obama beat Mcain in his home state Virgina, where he was born. Obama also won Ohio, the biggest repbulican state there is. And i would know, having lived there all my life.It was a revolutionary moment …. i was here at the dorms and as soon as the announced it . I ran all through the halls. There was even a big party outside the dorms all night. Its still shocking. I still would like to congradulate Palin and Mccain for there efforts, but this time the well deserve canidate won. IM just excitied to see that Leadership Obama will bring with him, He will probably have a collection of laywers, senators , and good advisors to help him. I am so happy for Obama and his family, it must feel so great to be the first African Americans in the white house to live EVER…. This is truly the best year….. 2008 the year I graduated high school and the year my president became Black.
My thoughts about the 2008 presidential election are just OBAMA. I can’t endorse OBAMA enough. I’m so proud of him for making the biggest accomplishment for African Americans becoming the first African American President. I knew Obama would make a change not just for black people but for everybody in the United States. As soon as it was announced that he won everybody ran out of the dorms, boys ran throughout KD, running around the block, and went to the celebration party in the UC. As of today I am still suffering with a sore throat from all the screaming we were doing. It was my first time voting and I was glad I could help make a change. The results still are shocking to me. I’m pretty sure it will take a while for Obama and his family a while to take it all that he is the first black president ever. This is also a major accomplishment for his two daughters, how many people can say my father was the first one in history to be the first Black president.
My thoughts on the 2008 presidential election were that it was one thing that I would tell my grandchildren. “I was alive when Barack Obama was elected president.” It was truly a history defying moment. I honestly have to say that this election was very exciting. It was truly the first time I was so involved in politics. I actually sat down, did my research, and voted on a candidate (Obama). I was literally the first time I was concerned for my future in this country. I mean to say that the only other time I’m concerned about my future is school wise. If it isn’t school related, I really didn’t care. But this election made me think differently. I made me realized that in less than 3 years I will be out of college. Hopefully I will be accepted to some medical school and working on a career in medicine. I came to the realization that I was an adult now. In no time will I be paying bills, grocery shopping, and having kids. This was a truly serious matter. I made me scared. Will our generation be able to make the right decisions and lead this country towards success or will this country crumble. Where would we go, how would we survive? It was also the first time I was determined to VOTE!! I know many people say that voting doesn’t matter, the Electoral College handles everything. But for me, it was a personal matter. It was my voice. I wanted my voice to be heard.
I was also a HUGE supporter of Obama. His story and path towards change made me determined to go out there and spread his message. I truly believe he will do this country well. It time for a change. A good change.
My feelings about the 2008 presidential election are filled with astonishment and joyfulness. Never in a million years would America have thought that we would ever see the day that an African-American would be elected as the president of the United States of America. I as a person of this generation feel somewhat honored to be able to say that my vote was apart of this historical moment. And not only that, but this was my very first voting experience. I must admit at first, this election was not a big deal to me. I just looked at it as if it were a regular election. It took for me to start volunteering at one of the Obama Headquarters to realize that this was a serious matter. And, that if Obama had won then this would mean a great change for America and society. So, from that point, I began to help as much as I possibly could. I tried to tell as many people as I could that they had to vote. Some had said if you were not voting for Obama, then you should not have voted at all, yet I felt that it did not necessarily make a difference if you were voting for McCain or Obama, because every vote counted towards something in this election. And, I am going to tell you something really funny that I did on the night of November 4th. I was studying my biology and watching all the different channels to keep up with the electoral votes for each candidate. I glanced straight at the television and saw that Obama was in lead. But, I was so into my studying that I did not realize that he had already won. So all of a sudden, I get a whole lot of calls from friends and family. Their all screaming or yelling in the phone; and, I’m still trying to figure out what’s going on. So, I finally turn the television volume up a little more and heard one of the reporters say that Obama had won. I nearly lost my mind trying to jump for joy. That was one of the best feelings that I had ever had. I think that the world is in need of a change, and I do believe that Barack Obama is the one who is going to make that change happen.
The election was great overall, it was my first time voting. Im happy that i was a part of a big change that will go down in history. I would have never thought that my vote would actually count. It seemed as though more young adults were interested in this years presidential election and i was right. I watched every debate and took the time to listen to the issues that America was facing, they influenced to vote. The night of November 4th, I couldnt believe that Obama won ,it took me awhile to digest what had just happened. It was an emotional moment for me. I was so excited, and everyone around me were jumping around chanting “OBAMA” or “YES WE DID!”, it was a great feeling. Im so glad that i was a part of breaking the tradition in the United States, it was about time. It was so much more than race itself, here is a man, who is a great individual in all aspects.I cant wait to tell my grand children about the night of november 4th.
Tuesday, November 4, 2008, that morning I woke up early. I got dressed in my best clothes and helped my grandmother into the car. My aunt drove us to the polls, there I casted my first and probably most meaningful vote in my natural life.
I was excited. Later that day I went to class, I half expected everyone to be dressed in Obama t-shirts but being in a prodominately republican state, umm yea…..there aren’t that many obama t-shirt sellers. I was disappointed but I carried on through the day. After classes, I went to Mcdonald’s and proceeded to clock in. Work was boring, the usual happened: take orders, take money, and give items: cups, straws, napkins, and the public favorite ketchup. Next I made fries, put em in grease, after i minute shake basket and press duty, and wen it says pull…pull them up, shake em, drain em, pour em out and put salt on them. Then I worked “drive thru.” I put drinks in the right order, put lids on them, pressed next order to review pending orders, checked bags to make sure they had everything, made shakes, cones, and sundaes, and gave out the orders with the most common requested item: KETCHUP!! BORING DAY!!! CNN was on in the lobby but I was too busy to watch. 9 o’clock rolled around and we closed the lobby so everything slowed down. Then 10 came and it was time for me to clock out! YES!!!! Tired and ironically hungry, I put in my pin and proceeded to walk through the door!!! BARACK IS THE NEXT ELECTED PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES!!! i heard!! We celebrated!!! I walked outside….MY PRESIDENT IS BLACK, MY LAMBO’S BLUE!!!…was what I heard. The song engulfed me and everything disappeared. I began to cry! a voice whispered in my head….we did it…finally….we did it. The voice of my ancestors echoed in my head and their blood ran strong through my vains. Our cries heard. Our fights not in vain. For once I wasn’t a black young woman…….I WAS AN AMERICAN!!!!
Even though the election is over and we have our new Presidents, It was definitely an experience for me. I remember when I was younger and talking about h government and voting in school. I was one of those kids that couldn’t wait to vote in my first election. For Barack versus McCain to be my first voting experience was amazing. When I first turned 18 I made sure when the deadlines where to register to vote, but since I was going to school out of state I didn’t know how that would work. Thanks to Xavier I was able to register and vote on campus. Before this nominations came down to the last two candidates it was making history. To have a women and an African American running for presidency nominations was a sight to see. Then the Republican Party adding a woman as Vice President to the ballot made it even more historical. I also wanted to be involved with campaigning but it was very hard to get to the headquarters without transportation, so I didn’t get to do as much as I liked. Two days before the election a guy from the Obama Headquarters called and asked if I would like to volunteer the day of the election. I excitedly agree and they had transportation ready to come get me and my friends. At five o’clock November 4, 2008 I woke up ready to start my day. My two friends and I, went to the headquarters and got the banners ready to take the around to the campuses. We went and placed banners on Dillard’s University, Tulane University, Loyola University and Southern University of New Orleans campus. After that we went around a neighborhood and passed out flyers and made sure people got out and voted. It felt great that I was able to do something to help in this Presidency election and this is a story that I can’t wait to tell my children!
As far as the election results go, i am quite elated. I feel that the race was a good one. I ma y have been pro- oine person and against the other but i understood that whatever the outcome i would have to just deal. I feel that the final results were due to a nation for change coming together and lettingf their voice be heard. I especially feel that the younger voters made trheir voice heard. This was my first election and i felt pretty good that i made a difference. In fact everywhere there was voting polls i could see a big turnout with other people my age. I felt kind of sad because we overlook the fact that the younger younger people especially teens didn’t really have a choice on the president elect and that is kind of sad. You dont think about stuff like that when you are young bout now that you can make a difference you see things in a whole new light. On another note the next major election, many more youth will be able to vote and have a chance fior their voice to be heard. Alot of people were very relieved of the president elect but many weren’t in the end i feel that we should all just put aside our differences and make this thing work….go obama!
The 2008 presidential election was my very first election. I’ve been studying this election since my 12th grade year. I took a class called contemporary issues and we had to do several projects relating to the election. One time we had to look each candidate’s platform and I noticed that they were very similar. How do I feel about this election? I believe that is was one of the biggest elections in the history of elections. There was so much riding on the winner’s shoulders. I’m happy that Obama won the election and is now president elect Obama. I liked his platform since the beginning. I think this election was so big because it gives African Americans hope. You can achieve anything. I also think Obama was a great candidate because he relates to everyone. He’s a mixture of races and cultures and he is just a president for anyone. Something that was very impressive was the fact that the 18-24 year old age group actually came out to the polls and voted. The voice of the young people was heard and they were able to get their opinion out there. I just hope that Obama will be about to help our economy and get us out of this recession. I also hope that he will be able to lower gas prices some more because I remember the good old days when gas was very cheap. Hopefully he will make some decisions to end this war and just have the U.S. become the great nation it once was.
This 2008 election was a great election. Both of the candidate platforms were really good. It was a very historical campaign because you had either the option to have the first African American president or the first female vice president. So this election was full of history’s first. This election was one of the biggest voter turnouts. America was really looking for a president that was going to help change the world. America isn’t really in a good state right now. Economy is bad. There are a lot of foreclosures. Social Security may not even exist when I get older. America was really looking for a leader and this is the first time America really rallied together to get a president. For this election, the real reason why Obama was able to capture so many votes was because it was big voter turnout for people between the ages of 18 to 24. People between the ages of 18 to 24 have had the lowest voter turnout for several elections in the past. I think the reason why this changed with Obama is because the younger generation was looking for change. Change was Obama’s platform from the begging and the younger generation could understand that. The election process was fun. I was very happy to be able to vote at the age of 18. I feel like I was born in the perfect year. Not everyone gets to have their first election the year they turn 18. Overall this election was a great election. People wanted change and I believe they got it.
This election reminded me of the election in 2000, I still remember that election I was 10 years old in the fifth grade. We had a mock election and everything just like this election. I that was the first time I had actually watched all the debates and actually followed the candidates through the whole election. This election I did even more because I was eligible to vote. I was very excited that I was able to vote in this historic election. I am glad that I made so what of a difference by voting. The two candidates both had a good campaign going on. McCain chose to be the bad guy and Obama chose to be the good guy. I believe that Obama is the best president for the United States at this time because not only did Americans want Obama to win but other people in different countries wanted him to win. That is something major when other people that are not in your country want you to when the presidency that means that something is wrong and it is affecting everyone else in the world. This election was also extremely close if you look at it from the public’s eyes McCain was not that far behind in the popular votes. I never saw Obama winning the election like he did. He won the election with before all the votes had been counted and this is amazing for him to be the first black president and to win like he did with the electoral votes’ that is truly awesome.
